For the past couple of years I’ve been trying to get to know myself better as a songwriter. It’s challenging when you have clashing influences and connect with different genres in different ways.
Lately I’ve found myself wanting to bring out the darker, broodier side of myself. I connect with things that make me feel emotion, so writing songs like that comes easily for me. On the flip side, I’m obsessed with fun pop music that drives me, makes me want to dance, and makes me feel unstoppable.
I found myself in a situation where I was worrying about what other people would think, (which is something I’m against); I value opinions and constructive criticism but I usually do things without thinking too much about how people will view me as a musician. This is possibly because in the past I’ve had a band (or have been supported by others in my close crowd) and haven’t given it much thought.
As a solo artist everything is different. All of a sudden I cared, without having a band or people to support me. Now I am now the only person people will be criticising. Writing pop songs comes easiest to me without a band, so I have stuck with that. It brings a side out in me that I’d prefer to have around.
Over the past couple of years I’ve been working on different tracks, production, learning how to record and collaborating with other solo artists. I met my now bandmate, Jamie (JCOS) when I lived in Melbourne. He played the synth for me at the one show I did, and we’ve stayed close ever since.
I’m now woking on my first solo album with Jamie and it’s one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done.
At the moment I’m in London and he’s in Melbourne, we send each other stems and Skype mix as much as we can. It’s relaxed, cheap and fun. We started off not really knowing what we were doing but have learnt so much already and we are happy with the songs we are producing.
We just finished our first song ‘Tonight We Fly’.
I’m really excited about the album, which will be ready for release next year.
I’ve recently collaborated on a song with Nik Brinkman for his project ‘Ghostwriters Collective’ titled ‘We’re Magic’. We will post it later this week for you to hear!
